Installation & Critical Considerations

Chimney pots are intended to be securely installed within a bed of mortar on top of your masonry chimney cap.

Flue Liner Compatibility

• The base dimensions of the chimney pot do not need to precisely match your flue liner.

• Crucially, the pot's base must not encroach upon the inside open area of the flue liner.

  • Note: A special exception allows round-based pots to slightly impinge at the corners of a square flue, but by no more than $3/4$ inch (this specific pot has a square base).

• Your flue liner may either extend upwards into the chimney pot or terminate flush with the top surface of the chimney cap.

Reinforced Anchoring (Optional)

For added security against severe weather events such as tornadoes, hurricanes, or earthquakes, supplementary anchoring can be utilized. This involves drilling a $1/4$–$1/2$-inch diameter hole on at least two opposite sides of the chimney pot, allowing a bar to anchor it firmly into the grout or the chimney walls.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

1. Ensure the chimney pot is positioned perfectly plumb (vertical).

2. Set the chimney pot into a bed of fresh mortar on top of the chimney cap.

3. Confirm that the chimney cap itself is constructed in accordance with ASTM C1283-02 8, or an approved alternative standard.

4. All anchoring hardware used must be composed of either stainless steel or another non-corrosive metal.

5. Apply a mortar seal a minimum of 2 inches up the base of the chimney pot.

6. Perform flashing using the method required by relevant referenced standards.

Flue dimensions can vary significantly depending on the manufacturer and age of the liner. It is critical to accurately measure your flue liner before ordering a chimney pot to ensure a proper and safe fit.

• Key Reminder: The chimney pot base should not impinge upon the inside surface of the flue liner.

• Sizing Convention: Square flue liners are nominally sized using their OUTSIDE dimensions, whereas round flue liners are nominally sized using their INSIDE dimensions.
