Installation Guidelines & Critical Considerations

Chimney pots are designed to be securely seated on the masonry chimney cap within a bed of mortar.

Flue Liner Compatibility

• The dimensions of the chimney pot's base do not need to precisely match the flue liner.

• Crucially, the base must not obstruct the interior area of the flue liner.

  • Permitted Exception: A round-based pot may slightly overlap the corners of a square flue, provided this encroachment is no more than $3/4$ inch.

• The flue liner can extend either upwards into the chimney pot or terminate flush with the top surface of the chimney cap.

Anchoring for Extreme Conditions

To prevent damage from severe weather events like tornadoes, hurricanes, or earthquakes, consider additional anchoring. This can be achieved by drilling a $1/4$–$1/2$-inch diameter hole on at least two opposing sides of the pot and using a bar to anchor it into the grout or the chimney walls.

Step-by-Step Installation

1. Ensure the chimney pot is installed perfectly plumb (vertical).

2. Set the chimney pot into a bed of mortar on top of the chimney cap.

3. The chimney cap itself must be constructed in accordance with ASTM C1283-02 8 or an approved equivalent.

4. All anchoring materials used must be stainless steel or another non-corrosive metal.

5. Apply mortar a minimum of 2 inches up the base of the chimney pot.

6. Perform flashing according to the methods required by relevant referenced standards.

Flue dimensions can vary significantly depending on the manufacturer and age of the liner. It is imperative to accurately measure your flue liner before ordering to ensure the chimney pot will fit properly.

• Critical Note: The chimney pot base must not impinge upon the inside surface of the flue liner.

• Sizing Convention: Square flue liners are nominally sized using their OUTSIDE dimensions, while round flue liners are nominally sized using their INSIDE dimensions.
