Installation & Critical Considerations

Chimney pots are designed for secure placement within a bed of mortar on top of your masonry chimney cap.

Flue Liner Compatibility

• The dimensions of the chimney pot's base do not need to perfectly match those of the flue liner it is installed upon.

• However, the base must not impede the inside open area of the flue liner.

  • One Exception: Round-based pots are permitted to slightly overlap the corners of a square flue, provided this impingement is no greater than $3/4$ inch.

• The flue liner may extend upwards into the chimney pot, or it can be flush with the top surface of the chimney cap.

Reinforced Anchoring (Optional)

For enhanced protection against severe weather events such as tornadoes, hurricanes, or earthquakes, additional anchoring is recommended. This involves drilling a $1/4$–$1/2$-inch diameter hole on at least two opposing sides of the chimney pot and using a bar to anchor it securely into the grout or the chimney walls.

Installation Steps

1. Ensure the chimney pot is installed perfectly plumb (vertically straight).

2. Set the chimney pot into a fresh bed of mortar placed on the masonry chimney cap.

3. The chimney cap must be constructed in accordance with ASTM C1283-02 8 or an approved alternative standard.

4. All anchoring materials used must be either stainless steel or another non-corrosive metal.

5. Apply a mortar seal a minimum of 2 inches up the base of the chimney pot.

6. Implement flashing methods as required by referenced standards.

DO NOT use decorative chimney tops on any pre-engineered or prefabricated fireplace/chimney system (often referred to as zero-clearance fireplaces) without receiving written consent from the manufacturer. Improper installation of these products in conjunction with various metal flue systems could result in fire and/or carbon monoxide buildup, potentially leading to property damage and/or death.

All flue liner sizes provided are NOMINAL dimensions and do not precisely represent the true measurements of your specific flue liner. Flue dimensions can vary considerably based on the manufacturer and age of the liner. It is critical to accurately measure your flue liner before placing an order to ensure the chimney pot will fit correctly.

• Key Reminder: The chimney pot base must not impinge upon the inside surface of the flue liner.

• Sizing Convention: Square flue liners are nominally sized using their OUTSIDE dimensions. Round flue liners are nominally sized using their INSIDE dimensions.
